GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION (STEINER)
STEINER PATHWAY TOWARDS A MASTERS IN EDUCATION

Course Information
The University of Canberra is offering a pathway towards a Masters Degree in Education specializing in Steiner Education. The program is planned to include two steps: the first is an introductory Graduate Certificate (12 credit points) and the second step outlines a selection of education and educational leadership units that in effect comprise the equivalent of a second Graduate Certificate (to make up the remaining 12 credit points). The possibility for teachers to make their own selection of units (worth 12 credit points) to suit their individual career paths in specialist areas (like inclusive education, or second language teaching) is also available. Entrance requirements include a Bachelor of Education Degree or a Bachelors Degree and an Education Diploma.
The Graduate Certificate in Education (Steiner)
The course is designed to benefit state accredited teachers who are new to Steiner philosophy. The units provide an introductory overview to the main features of Steiner’s educational philosophy and to the aesthetic and scientific approach that underpins the curriculum.
For experienced Steiner teachers the course offers an opportunity to refresh and re-enliven an understanding of both contemporary and Steiner perspectives on the curriculum, theory of knowledge and human socio-emotional and cognitive development. Teachers undertaking this pathway will have the opportunity to become acquainted with the course content so as to use its structure as a basis for mentoring new teachers. The Graduate Certificate pathway also puts in place the first step towards a Masters degree for those teachers who are interested in further study.
The introductory nature of the course means that it is likely to assist administrators, school board members and others involved in educational leadership in Steiner schools to better understand the unique educational ethos of the communities in which they work.
As adult learning models emphasize the importance of group learning and of learning through teaching, the course provides a forum for sharing of expertise and an opportunity for discussion and ongoing networking. In recognition of the importance of the development of imaginative capacities, the holiday intensives include artistic, singing and eurythmy workshops.
The Graduate Certificate course includes the following four units that are each worth three credit points:
Steiner Educational Foundations: This unit provides an introduction to the philosophy that underpins the education. The survey includes a dialogue between a “soul-spiritual” educational perspective and recent research findings in physiology and developments in educational psychology in relation to Steiner’s phases of human development.
Steiner Curriculum Contexts: This unit encompasses an overview of the main lesson curriculum as practiced in Steiner schools. Both the original early 20th Century context and contemporary perspectives will be considered. The philosophical and Goethean underpinnings of the science and humanity streams will be explored as a pathway towards experiential study.
Professional Practice Framework: Participants are given the opportunity in this unit to develop their approach to Steiner methodology (the philosophy informing method) within their own specific subject area. The perspectives that have been discussed in the above units are now applied in a practical way to curriculum planning within a particular subject.
Professional Practice in Action: The focus of the unit is on Steiner teaching methods as relevant in a specific subject area. Participants apply the program that has been planned in the above unit and keep a record of its implementation and evaluation. There is scope here for a postgraduate style in-service practicum training where a mentor teacher oversees and assists a new teacher to learn Steiner teaching methods and how to apply the philosophy in practice.
The Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership (Steiner)
For experienced teachers with a working knowledge of Steiner’s educational philosophy, the course offers an opportunity to refresh and re-enliven an understanding of contemporary and Steiner perspectives in the areas of educational leadership, research methods and methodologies, educational psychology, curriculum development, and adult learning styles.
The course focuses on preparing teachers to take up leadership roles in schools in relation to the management and planning of education programs and curriculum development, with a particular focus on the setting up of school-based support structures for teacher education and professional development courses. Assessment tasks include the evaluation of existing educational programs and the envisioning of new initiatives. Teachers are encouraged to integrate the assessment tasks into their working lives rather than taking them on as an ‘extra’ load. The course is designed to facilitate the building of a foundational structure for a school-based university tutoring program by providing the up skilling needed for the mentoring of teachers new to Steiner philosophy. Participants are encouraged to publish their research projects so as to contribute to the wider Steiner educational research community.
The Graduate Certificate course includes the following four units that are each worth three credit points:
Educational Evaluation and Effectiveness 7754
This unit explores the concepts of personal, team and organizational effectiveness in a range of settings. Planning, implementation and evaluation are key strategies used to examine the performance of individuals, teams and organizations. The relationship between contemporary evaluation methodologies and Steiner’s approach to research, with reference to his views on schools as “research academies” is explored. The threefold model of social development is critically examined both in the cultural context of Steiner’s life and times and in relation to current school management structures. The Steiner pathway of inner development is outlined and discussed and some of Steiner’s prescribed exercises are practiced as group activities.
Professional Development and Knowledge Transfer 7780
Steiner’s theory of knowledge is investigated in relation to contemporary perspectives of knowledge transfer. The theories and principles of how adults learn are set in a context of personal reflection and ways in which these theories relate to Steiner’s views on human development are further explored. The unit provides teachers with the opportunity to critically evaluate the professional development programs in their schools in relation to Steiner’s theory for social reform and to plan, implement and evaluate new interventions and programs.
Leadership in Learning Organizations 7696
This unit explores leadership and management roles within a variety of learning organizations. Students are encouraged to develop understandings of concepts such as leadership, learning cultures and organizational development. Global issues concerning Government, educational institutions and the community are identified and students are encouraged to explore their implications for leadership and management. Steiner’s vision of schools as “republican academies” is revisited within the context of contemporary theories that describe schools as “learning organizations” and professional development in terms of “lifelong learning.” Recent theories of collaboration and team building are explored in relation to the continued experimentation in the Steiner system with shared leadership structures.
Introduction to Research 8099
This unit provides a critical overview of research perspectives and practices in the social sciences and humanities, with particular reference to education and communication, and to such generic practices as reading and critiquing research reports, communicating the results of research, and conducting ethical research. Students will also be introduced to a variety of research practices, such as action research, case study, discourse analysis, ethnography and historical inquiry. Steiner’s call for on-going teacher research is explored within the above outlined context of contemporary perspectives. The role of teachers’ research in building the curriculum to meet the developmental needs of students is investigated. Goetheanism is further explored as a meeting place of the arts and sciences and as an experiential pathway of study.
COURSE DELIVERY
The Graduate Certificate in Education (Steiner) is delivered as a part-time course in distance mode with online learning back up. Each unit includes an intensive which runs in the Summer and Spring holidays. The home study plan is supported by the structure of the unit: there are five modules that are presented one per day during each of the holiday intensives. An online tutorial task worth a 10% assessment weighting is assigned to each module. The tutorial tasks and online discussions are designed to prepare participants to undertake the major assessment item which is an essay style task with a 40% weighting; a further 10% is allocated to participation in unit activities.
WORKLOAD
The amount of time spent on the home study plan depends on prior knowledge, skills and learning style. As a guide the notional total for a 3 credit point unit over a 14 week semester is assumed to be 150 hours or an average of 10 hours per week. However as this calculation includes weekly time spent in class, the class hours accumulated during the intensive can be deducted reducing the total to about 7 or 8 hours a week.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The course is open to teachers and administrators who have a three year undergraduate degree or equivalent.
COST
Approximate Full Course Fee: $2200
Approximate Cost per Unit: $550
Fee Help is available as a payment deduction from salary.
Please note the above outline is still in the planning stages and there may be some minor changes made in relation to the names and inclusion of some of the units. However it is unlikely that the overall content, structure and orientation of the course will change.
