Casuarina Steiner School Class 3 win Story Singing section in Wakakirri National Story Festival

Wakakirri is a National Story Festival. It celebrates Environmental Arts and story-telling through six categories, Story-Dance, Story-Singing, Story-Telling, Story-Writing, Story-Arts and Story-Film.

All Steiner schools appreciate the value of story telling and so Casuarina Steiner School’s Class 3 children entered the festival with an original song “I Walk This Land” about what they had discovered around their beautiful local area of Coffs Harbour and Bellingen.

They dedicated their song to the original owners of the land, the Gumbayngirr people, who earlier in the year had shared their story-song, “Yulardarla” with the school. At Harmony Day the children sang “Yulardarla” with the Gumbayngirr Elders Choir and it was a very special moment.

The 21-27 July 2007 was National Story Week and at a launch in Sydney, the winners of the Country Wakakirri sections were announced. Casuarina Steiner School were the winners of their Story Singing section!

Their entry will soon be available on the Wakakirri website, www.wakakirri.com

Wakakirri Story-singing – Class 3

I Walk the Land

As I walk the land of the Gumbayngirr
I’m amazed at what I see
I can bushwalk, surf and snorkel too
I can just sit and drink in the view

This is the land of the Gumbayngiir
I walk the land with you

Shining sun sets the seas a-sparkling
Rising majestically to crown the day
Sentinel guarding the harbour sands
Salt, spray and surf, watching dolphins dance.

Dolphins dance, dolphins dance,
Watching dolphins dance!

Crabs scuttle, shells sprinkle sand so gold
Stingrays and sharks, lurk about
Shearwaters roost on their island home.
Turtles glide in coral reef thrones

Turtles glide, turtles glide,
In coral reef thrones.

Crystal waterfalls from rainforests high
Ancient canopies are towers to the sky
Mountains of old hide secrets to be found
Harmonies of birds orchestrally resound

Resound, resound, harmonies resound!
Harmonies resound.

Our North Coast towns are rainbow ribbons
Threading their way through valleys and fields
From magic mountains to warm, blue seas
Colours like a rainbow, every colour yields

Colours like a rainbow, Every colour yields!
Colours like a rainbow, Every colour yields!

Lyrics by Class 3 and Tracey Puckeridge
Music by Kirsten Mackenzie
